Dr. John Glees MD, FRCR, DMRT

The Lister Hospital

Dr. John Glees, a highly experienced Radiotherapist and Clinical Oncologist, has dedicated over four decades to the treatment of keloids and various tumors.

Born in Oxford in 1941 during World War II, Dr. Glees was raised in an academic environment—his father, Dr. Paul Glees, was a professor of anatomy, neuroanatomy, and physiology, and his mother, Dr. Eva Glees, was a dental surgeon.

Dr. Glees trained in Bonn, Oxford, and Goettingen, earning his medical degree in 1966 with first-class honors and completing a dissertation on Glioblastoma Multiforme in 1967. His medical journey then led him to the United States, where he trained at Monmouth Medical Center, New Jersey, in affiliation with Hahnemann Medical School.

Returning to the UK in 1971, Dr. Glees advanced through several key positions at The Royal Marsden Hospitals in London & Surrey, achieving his DMRT (1974) and FRCR (1976). In 1981, he was appointed Consultant Clinical Oncologist & Radiotherapist at The Royal Marsden and St. George’s Hospital Medical School.

Dr. Glees devoted nearly 40 years to treating gastrointestinal (GI), genitourinary (GU), lung, breast, and skin tumors, while also specializing in benign disease treatment using superficial radiotherapy—an area where he remains one of the few experts in the UK.

Since retiring from the NHS in 2010, he has continued his practice at Cancer Centre London, Parkside, focusing on keloid treatment and collaborating with dermatologists and plastic surgeons across London.

Keloid Treatment Innovations
Dr. Glees has a 40+ year interest in keloid treatment, particularly in post-operative radiotherapy. His approach has been widely recognized, especially among Caribbean patients suffering from ear keloids due to piercings.

He is a strong advocate of the “immediate post-operative 10Gy single-dose” radiation therapy using 60KV orthovoltage, which offers better long-term results compared to the older split-dose (3-session) radiation therapy. His protocol is designed to be more effective, convenient, and patient-friendly.

Additionally, Dr. Glees has developed an alternative keloid treatment protocol, using superficial radiotherapy (4Gy every 3 months over a year, only if necessary, up to 4 doses total) for selected keloid patients.

International Recognition
His expertise continues to shape modern keloid treatment strategies, ensuring better patient outcomes and minimally invasive solutions for persistent keloid cases:

  • Keloid treatment with radiation
  • Best radiotherapy for keloids
  • Post-surgical keloid prevention
  • Superficial radiotherapy for keloids
